Noah is a brilliant, vibrant, imaginative 5 year old boy. He creates intense and complex play sequences in his mind and acts them out with abandon. He loves Star Wars especially. His ability to count and remember numbers is astronomical. He is naturally approachable and easily makes friends. He loves his friends immensely and thrills at any opportunity to play with them.
Noah suffers from Childhood apraxia of speech.
Childhood Apraxia of Speech or Verbal Apraxia is a neurological motor speech disorder. Children with apraxia of speech have great difficulty creating the exact, highly refined and specific series of muscle movements that are necessary for intelligible speech. Unlike a developmental speech delay, apraxia of speech does not simultaneously affect comprehension. The impact of apraxia can result in a frustrated child who can understand complex speech, thoughts and ideas, but is not able to successfully articulate his or her comprehension.
It is excessively apparent that Noah’s comprehension far surpasses his ability to express his ideas in speech. His anxiety and diminished confidence manifest when he attempts to communicate in social situations.
Our sincerest hope is that providing him with an assistive speech device will enable him to verbally express himself in school and social environments. This is why we are having a benefit; to raise money for this device.
The Garden Art benefit will be held Tuesday August 11th, 2009 at 7pm; and will be located at my dear friend Kieran's house. Please come and enjoy the company of Noah, and learn more about Apraxia. Noah has been working very hard on his wonderful masterpieces, which will be displayed.
